The Dongfeng Box, also known as the Nammi 01 in China, recently made its debut in Malaysia at a media preview event. As the Box’s first right-hand drive model, it is slated for a local launch later this year. Last November, the Malay Vehicle Importers and Traders Association of Malaysia (PEKEMA) signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Dongfeng Motor Corporation (DFMC), represented by China Dongfeng Motor Industry (DFMIEC), to bring the vehicle to the Malaysian market.

The MoU outlines plans to introduce the Dongfeng Box (S31) electric vehicle in Malaysia, with initial units to be imported and future plans for local assembly. Once local production starts, the model is expected to be exported to other ASEAN countries.

The Dongfeng Box will compete directly with the BYD Dolphin. It measures 4,030 mm in length, 1,810 mm in width, and 1,570 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,660 mm. For comparison, the BYD Dolphin is 4,290 mm long, 1,770 mm wide, and 1,570 mm tall, with a 2,700 mm wheelbase.

In terms of performance, if the Malaysian model mirrors the China-spec version, the Box will feature a front-mounted, front-wheel drive (FWD) single motor producing 93 hp and 160 Nm of torque, with a top speed of 140 km/h. According to CLTC test results, it offers a range of 330 km to 430 km.

While safety specifications for the Malaysian version have not yet been confirmed, it is expected to include Level 2 semi-automatic driving assistance features if it mirrors the China-spec Dongfeng Nammi 01. These features may include forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-keeping assist, active cruise control (ACC), and automatic parking.

The Box’s launch, initially scheduled for mid-2024, has been slightly delayed and is now anticipated to occur by the end of 2024.
