The Toyota Vios Hybrid, first launched in Thailand earlier this year, now appears to be on its way to Malaysia. Over the weekend, two units of the current-generation Vios were spotted on local roads with their badges completely covered. Since the petrol Vios is already sold here, the disguised badges strongly suggest that Toyota is preparing to introduce new hybrid variants.
Two Expected Variants – Including a GR Sport Model
Based on the spy photos, the Toyota Vios Hybrid (HEV) could arrive in at least two variants. One is expected to mirror the current Vios G variant, while the other appears to feature the GR Sport body kit – identifiable through its sportier bumpers, black accents, and unique wheels similar to the Thai model.

Hybrid Powertrain: Efficient and Familiar
In Thailand, the Vios Hybrid uses:
- 1.5L Atkinson-cycle engine – 91 hp, 121 Nm
- Electric motor – 80 hp, 141 Nm
- 0.7 kWh battery
- Combined output: 111 hp
This setup is the same series-parallel system seen in models like the Corolla Cross Hybrid, allowing the engine or motor (or both) to drive the front wheels through an e-CVT. Toyota claims fuel efficiency of 29.4 km/L, making it one of the most economical sedans in the segment.
Exterior & Chassis Enhancements
The Vios Hybrid looks similar to the regular Vios but gains several hybrid-exclusive upgrades in Thailand:
- Five-lug wheels
- 16-inch (Premium)
- 17-inch (GR Sport)
- 12% stiffer front suspension
- 9% stiffer rear suspension
- Larger shock absorber cores (+10%)
- Retuned electric power steering
These refinements improve stability and help manage the hybrid system’s additional weight.
Interior Features
Inside the Thai-spec Vios Hybrid:
- 10.1-inch infotainment screen with Apple CarPlay & Android Auto
- 7-inch digital instrument cluster
- Six-speaker audio system
- 64-colour ambient lighting
The GR Sport variant adds:
- GR-themed leather + suede seats
- Exclusive door card design
- Pioneer six-speaker system
Toyota Safety Sense (TSS)
Safety features expected include:
- Pre-collision system with AEB
- Lane departure alert
- Front vehicle departure alert
- Adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go
Expected Pricing in Malaysia
In Thailand, the Vios Hybrid is positioned directly against its main competitor, the Honda City e:HEV. In Malaysia, the City e:HEV currently sells at RM111,900. If Toyota follows a similar pricing strategy, the Vios Hybrid could target this same pricing bracket.
